• The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is an object-oriented modelling language and seen as a kind of lingua franca in object-oriented software development; it forms the basis of most modeling methods for Web applications. UML allows to specify  the aspects of a software system in the form of models, and uses various diagrams to represent them graphically

• The three levels are content, i.e., the information and application logics underneath the Web application, hypertext, i.e., the structuring of the content into nodes and links between these nodes, and the presentation, i.e., the user interface or page layout.

• Structural links connect elements of the same node, e.g., from a review summary to the review details.

• Perspective links put various views of a node in relation to each other, e.g., the PostScript and the PDF versions of a paper.
• Application links put different nodes in relation to each other, depending on the application, e.g., a link pointing to “best paper”.

4. How many hierarchical levels define the model elements? Describe them.

• there are 3 levels:

• A presentation page describes a page presented to the user as a visualization unit. It can be composed of different presentation units.
• A presentation unit serves to group related user interface elements, representing a logical fragment of the page. It presents a node stemming from the hypertext model.
• A presentation element is the basic building block of the presentation model. Presentation elements represent a node’s set of information and can include text, images, audio, etc.

5. Which are the objectives of customization modeling?

• Customization modeling is aimed at explicitly representing context information, and the adaptations derived from it. Depending on the modeling method the result is not always an explicit customization model. In most cases, customization modeling is intermingled with content, hypertext, and presentation models.

• The Model-Driven Development (MDD) approach not only advocates the use of models (such as those described in the previous sections) for the development of software, but also emphasizes the need of transformations in all phases of the development, from system specification to implementation and testing.

• The WebRatio Site Development Studio (http://www.webratio.com) is a model-based development tool that builds on the Web Modeling Language (WebML). This tool uses its own notation for hypertext modeling and additionally supports the ER notation and UML.

• According to (Bass et al. 1998), the architecture of a software system consists of its structures, the decomposition into components, and their interfaces and relationships. These patterns map fundamental structuring mechanisms for software systems. They describe architectural subsystems, their responsibilities, relationships, and interplay. One example of this type of pattern is the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern.

10. What is a framework?

A framework is a reusable software system with general functionality already implemented. The framework can be specialized into a ready-to-use application . The framework serves as a blueprint for the basic architecture and basic functionalities for a specific field of application.

11. Describe Peer to Peer (P2P) architecture

P2P stands for direct communication between two devices – the peers – in a system without using a server, i.e., they communicate over a point-to-point connection. The peers are basically equal.P2Psystemsdescribehowthe devices in such a network communicate and how they can “discover” each other. Examples of P2P systems include JXTA  and Xmiddle.

Firewall: A piece of software regulating the communication between insecure networks (e.g., the Internet) and secure networks (e.g., corporate LANs). This communication is filtered by access rules.

Where We Are Now

Before talking about where e-learning is going, it is worth spending a few words to describe here we are now.

When we think of learning content today, we probably think of a learning object. Originating in the world of computer-based delivery (CBT) systems, learning objects were depicted as being like lego blocks or atoms, little bits of content that could be put together or organized. Standards bodies have refined the concept of learning objects into a rigorous form and have provided specifications on how to sequence and organize these bits of content into courses and package them for delivery as though they were books or training manuals.

Today, e-learning mainly takes the form of online courses. From the resources distributed by MIT’s OpenCourseware project to the design of learning materials in Rice’s Connexions project to the offerings found from colleges and universities everywhere, the course is the basic unit of organization.
